-Probably the best drill for maintenance on your swing is working off the tee. But like any drill, it needs to be done correctly to have optimal results. To start off, put the tee in the middle of the plate, simulating a strike down the middle. If in a batting cage, strive for hitting line drives that hit the back of the cage without first hitting the sides, top or bottom of the cage. |
Focus on keeping the front side (front shoulder, front hip, front foot) square to the baseball. Try to make contact with the inside part of the ball. This will force your hands inside the ball and keep your body square. Play a game with yourself and see how many line drives you can hit to the back screen out of 20 swings. Try to always improve your score and if possible, have competitions with teammates to see who can hit the most line drives out of 20. Once you start to get the hang of that drill, then start moving the tee around. Start off and hit 15-20 balls to the opposite field. Then 15-20 up the middle, and 15-20 to the pull side. Then finish with 5-10 the opposite way. Keep sound mechanics and work inside and behind the baseball.
Proper mechanics need to be taught and need to be worked on everyday in the batting cage if you want to see improvement as a hitter. Once the game starts, forget the mechanics and focus on the baseball. Play the game within the game, of trying to beat the pitcher. If your mind is on mechanics while you are in the batter's box, you are in trouble. Tap the plate, look up at the pitcher, and say to yourself, "Let's go big boy, bring it on!" A strong mental approach is as important if not more important than mechanics. Trust in your ability. Be confident in your skills. Be patient, and relaxed while looking for your pitch to hit with controlled aggression. Don't get emotional, worrying about umpires, bad swings or results. It is hard enough to hit a moving ball with round bat. You don't need any negative thoughts or energy flowing through your body. Stay positive. Remember it is a team game. Hit to help your team win. Move runners over, have nine-pitch at bats. The rising popularity of showcase teams and events have taken away from young players learning team baseball. The finances of the game have turned it very selfish. I call it, "Two for four. What's the score?" The best feeling in the world, is winning championships. Team players win championships, bottom line. Selfish players play for themselves, their hits, their RBI's. Be a team guy.
It takes thousands upon thousands of swings to become a polished major league hitter. Remember the four "D's". Dedication, determination, discipline and desire! You apply those four to anything you do, and you can live your dreams. The rest is up to you! |
